TEXAS COAST

The Texas Coast is a fertile resource wonderland. On the one hand, largely undeveloped, on the other hand, home to the United States’ largest energy-exporting corridor. Embedded into a unique coastal landscape, the major cities cluster around four major bays from the Louisiana border in the north to the Mexican border in the south.
FUELED is drawing particular attention to Corpus Christi Bay and its adjacent cities in Nueces and San Patricio County. As this region has been undergoing a fossil fuel renaissance in recent years, the major goal is to adapt urban landscapes to the opportunities and challenges arising from industrial growth and environmental change.

TERRITORY >
THE ALPS
CENTRAL ALPS
​

The Alps have historically been a territory of trade and access, resource-based wealth, and strategic geographic location. The Alps' role as the water tower of central and south Europe has become even more significant as glaciers are melting rapidly.
FUELED draws particular attention to the Central Alps, around the city of Innsbruck. As complex logistical systems have started to shape the natural and built environment, transit within but especially through the Alps causes air pollution. The goal is to develop visions of how the alpine natural and built landscape of the Alps can adapt to the opportunities and challenges associated with a tourism-based industry and environmental change.
Committed to holistic design, FUELED works with interdisciplinary collaborators, private and private stakeholders, and community members to develop inclusive strategies.
TEAM
Developing adaptive design strategies is an interdisciplinary task. Initially started by a group of architects, landscape architects, and urban planners, the field of collaborators keeps constantly expanding. Recently, new partnerships with civil and environmental engineers and public policymakers have been formed.

FUNDING
Project funding for several research and creative work initiatives includes a “Water and Human Settlements Grant” awarded by the College of Architecture, Planning, and Public Affairs at UT Arlington in collaboration with the UNESCO Water Initiative.
​
The initial funding period has ranged from 2019-2021.
METHODS
​
FUELED utilizes a participatory mixed-methods approach combining literature review, geospatial mapping, and design thinking with qualitative and quantitative data collection based on stakeholder and community input.
Following a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, FUELED engages stakeholders and communities actively in all research and creative work stages. This method allows for project outcomes and research findings grounded in the very places and communities we work with.
